Auld was a photographer and artist during his service, selling battle photographs and drawings to newspapers and journals and fellow soldiers. The collection consists of letters from David to his family, particularly his father, during the American Civil War and several letters to David from his wife and cousin.

Bascom's son, Gustavus, fought in the Civil War and became a Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army.
